QATAR

The State of Qatar, an emirate in the Persian Gulf between Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, has an area of 4,247 sq. mi. (11,437 sq. km.) and a population of 599,000. Capital: Doha. Oil is the chief industry and export. ,Qatar was under Turkish control from 1872 until the beginning of World War I when the Ottoman Turks evacuated the Qatar Peninsula. In 1916 Sheikh Abdullah placed Qatar under the protection of Great Britain and gave Britain responsibility for its defense and foreign relations. Qatar joined with Dubai in a monetary union and issued coins and paper money in 1966 and 1969. When Britain announced in 1968 that it would end treaty relationships with the Persian Gulf sheikhdoms in 1971, this union was dissolved. Qatar joined Bahrain and seven trucial sheikhdoms (the latter now called the United Arab Emirates) in an effort to form a union of Arab emirates.
