RWANDA

The Republic of Rwanda, located in central Africa between the Republic of Congo and Tanzania, has an area of 10,169 sq. mi. (26,340 sq. km.) and a population of 7.67 million. Capital: Kigali. The economy is based on agriculture and mining. Coffee and tea are exported. ,German lieutenant Count von Goetzen was the first European to visit Rwanda, 1894. Four years later the court of the Mwami (the Tutsi King of Rwanda) willingly permitted the kingdom to become a protectorate of Germany. In 1916, during the African campaigns of World War I, Belgian troops from the Congo occupied Rwanda. After the war it, together with Burundi, became a Belgian League of Nations mandate under the name of the Territory of Rwanda-Urundi. Following World War II, Rwanda-Urundi became a Belgian administered U.N. trust territory. The Tutsi monarchy was deposed by the U.N. supervised election of 1961, after which Belgium granted Rwanda internal autonomy. On July 1, 1962, the U.N. terminated the Belgian trusteeship and granted full independence to both Rwanda and Burundi. Banknotes were used in common with the Belgian Congo, later with Burundi.,, ,A coup in 1973 established a military government in the 1980?s. There was increasing tension with refugees from neighboring Uganda, culminated in a 1990 Tutsi invasion.
